Friday Five: my favorite worship music artists This Friday, I wanted to do something a little different. I’ve been a fan of Christian music since the early 90s and have only recently gotten on the worship music bandwagon. I’ve always loved singing (slightly off […]

Tiny Tips – Nail Tricks
Happy Tuesday everyone! I thought I would start a little series called Tiny Tips – just a few quick things you can do to improve your life. Nothing too complicated and nothing too serious. For today, I would like to introduce you to my friend and blogger Samantha Pal Frazier over at Peaches n’ Creme . She has lots of fun product reviews and beauty tips. She just reviewed this polish from CoverGirl called Vio-Last that’s only $5! Check her blog out, like, comment, share, pin.
Here are some of my own tiny tips for nail polish:
- Look for coupons – my nail place has a frequent buyer program and gives out coupons on your birthday. I try to leave those coupons in my wallet because it’s so easy to forget them! Sunday circulars also have nail polish coupons that really add up.
- Take a steamy shower – I’m a pretty messy nail polisher and get nail polish all over my cuticles. To keep my nails neat and tidy, I polish them the evening before and then take a hot shower in the morning. While my conditioner is soaking in, I gently scrape the excess nail polish off my fingers and cuticles. The steam really loosens the polish from your skin but not your nails.
- Easy way to extend your manicure – I notice that most of my manicures chip at the tips a few days in, but the rest of the nail still looks good. Instead of reaching for my polish over and over, I just trim my nails a tiny bit shorter. Voila! Instant touch-up!
- Buff it out – Most polish needs something to grip on to to make it really stick. I use a buffer block with four sides and buff three sides, but not the fourth, before I put on nail polish. That smooths out any ridges or imperfections, but still gives the polish a bit of grip.
Friday Five: my favorite natural cleaning products My last Friday Five was about natural beauty products. Today I’d thought it might be fun to tell you about the products I use to keep my house beautiful. My house hasn’t been too beautiful lately due to […]
7 Tips for dealing with digital clutter Every day, I spend way too much time online. Really, who doesn’t? When I’m working from home, I spend even more time with technology. I’ve started to consider my computer/phone/iPad a kind of digital office. While my current […]
Friday Five: my top 5 favorite natural beauty products
With all the blustery weather and being snowed in out here on the East Coast, I thought it was a good time to introduce my “Friday Five” feature. Every Friday, I’ll be featuring a Top 5 list of my favorite things: beauty products, household organizers, books, you name it!
This week, I’d like to highlight some natural beauty products that I really love. I suppose living in Boulder, CO for ten years really sunk in because I’m a bit of a hippie and prefer natural beauty products over other non-green products. With a lot of skin sensitivities, I have to be really careful about what I put on my skin. I have a few prescription and other products that wouldn’t rank very high on a green beauty list (which I might blog about later in a Top 5 Guilty Pleasure Beauty Products post), so I try to mitigate the impact of those with greener options.
For me it’s all about reducing my footprint, not erasing it. I do what I can.

Mychelle “Hello, Beautiful!” Sensitive Skin Collection – I just purchased this a few weeks ago. I lived about 10 minutes down the road from this skincare company for years, but it took moving out east to get me to appreciate it! I am replacing my Cetaphil cleanser with the Mychelle Pure Harmony cleanser. It’s really gentle, non-irritating, and effective at removing every last trace of makeup. The Pure Harmony Mist reminds me a lot of a Dr. Hauschka product I used to love – refreshing, lightweight, non-drying, and a nice fragrance. I love the Pure Harmony Cream because it’s a serious moisturizer perfect for this time of year. I’m waiting until I’m out of my Proactiv face sunscreen before I try the Mychelle one, so I’ll keep you updated.
MOP Modern Organic Products C System C-Straight Straightening Cream – I have been using this hair straightening cream for years and now have had to dig around Amazon to find it. I have been really happy with most MOP products and especially love the Glisten Shine Drops as well as the C-Straight. These products are really lightweight and work well. With fine hair like mine, I can’t use anything too heavy. The C-Straight also has a light citrus scent that I love.
Kiss My Face Moisture Shave in Green Tea & Bamboo – I’ve been a fan of Kiss My Face since I met my then-vegan-now-vegetarian husband. Their products are cruelty free and full of beneficial botanical ingredients. I will not use any other shave cream but this one and keep an extra in my cabinet just in case. It’s moisturizing, creates a light foamy texture, and rinses clean.
Alba Botanica ACNEdote Body Wash – I have blemish-prone skin and have to use prescription treatments for it. The only natural product I feel like has an impact on my skin is the ACNEdote Body Wash. I have tried Proactiv and Neutrogena acne body washes in the past and they don’t seem to work as well as this one. It’s a bit pricey for me at $9 a bottle, so I use it just for the spots that really need it and use a less expensive body wash elsewhere. The body scrub texture is also a good prep for self-tanning.
Hello Toothpaste in Super Mint – I just picked this up last week after I ran out of my favorite Crest toothpaste. I never really liked the Tom’s of Maine style toothpaste alternatives but I thought it was worth a try. I’m giving this a big thumbs up! Hello products are vegan and cruelty-free and don’t contain drying alcohol. I read somewhere that alcohol and other harsh ingredients in toothpaste can contribute to chapped lips and the Hello toothpaste seems to be helping out there.
These are just five of my favorite natural beauty products. I’ve been doing my best to totally use up my non-green products before I purchase new ones. There’s nothing worse than wasting product and money. I’ll keep you updated on these favorites and others in the future.
What are your favorite natural beauty products? Have you found green replacements that are even better than the originals?
