On The Menu: A Healthier Shamrock Shake
‘Tis the season for the McDonald’s Shamrock Shake! Nothing brings back happier childhood Lent memories than a Shamrock Shake and a Filet-o-Fish on Fridays. I mean, I know we’re supposed to be fasting and making sacrifices, but… It’s also Girl Scout cookie season with a minty bookend to the Shamrock Shake: the Thin Mint cookie. Getting ramped up for St Patrick’s Day is the best excuse to love all things mint and green.
Rumor has it that McDonald’s is supposed to start selling the Shamrock Shake this week. I tried to grab one on Tuesday and no luck. While you’re waiting, I thought I would post a recipe for a homemade Shamrock Shake with a healthier spin. Although I absolutely love all the whipped cream, fake mint goodness, and syrupy sweet cherry on top it’s fun to enjoy this treat more often.
:: Shamrock Shake Smoothie ::
2 cups of your favorite unsweetened vanilla non-dairy milk
2 scoops of vegan chocolate protein powder
2 tablespoons fresh peppermint
2 cups fresh spinach
4 tablespoons cacao nibs or very dark vegan chocolate chips
1 frozen banana
In a high powered blender, combine all ingredients until smooth. Share with a friend and enjoy!
Expert Tip: If you decide to make your own whipped cream for a special treat, add 1 teaspoon of any fruit jam to the heavy whipping cream. Pop your bowl and whisk in the freezer for a few minutes and make sure both the carton of whipping cream and jam are very cold. Whisk until whipped to your desired consistency, and stop before it turns to butter. The pectin in the fruit jam will cut the whipping process time in half! And just 1 teaspoon of jam combined with a whole carton of whipping cream doesn’t really change the flavor at all.
I hope this is a treat you’ll be able to enjoy with your friends and family! Comment below if you have any other recipes with a minty spin this time of year.
