i heart makeup palettes
I heart makeup palettes.
When my mom was younger, she had this amazing eyeshadow palette that I played with all the time. Palette is a pretty weak word for it. It was an eyeshadow pyramid. Ever since then, I’ve been totally obsessed. I got them for Christmas, birthdays, you name it. Over the years, I realized that they are PERFECT for travel and for paring down your makeup to a few basic essentials. Sometimes palettes include mascara and eyeliner, as well as the usual fare of lipstick, blush and eyeshadow. These are the best ones by far.
I found this L’Oreal makeup palette at the Duty Free store in San Juan. It was stupidly expensive for what it is, but that’s the way it goes at Duty Free, I guess. Anyway, I just love all the colors and they are picked with hair color in mind… this one is for brunettes. I love the little lipstick brush, but with the blush, I usually use my own giant blush brush. In a pinch, I use my fingers for blush application because those little brushes can make it look harsh and kind of stripey.
You can find makeup palettes at many stores and inexpensive ones at places like Target. Sonia Kashuk is a favorite. The really fun ones are at Sephora. At Sephora.com you can look by brand and find “travel accessories” or “palettes.”
On another note, here are general guidelines for when makeup goes bad:
Lipstick: 1 year
Eye makeup: 3 months
Blush: 6 months
Nail polish: 2 years if stored properly (though I find it gets pretty goopy after awhile)
One way to get the most out of a palette is to find one with compartments that pop in and out so you can rotate colors and rotate when things go bad. Stila, Mark and DHC have some pretty great interchangeable products. Like the eyeshadow moon palette from DHC: http://www.dhccare.com/DHC/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=591&Catalog=DHC+USA
I think makeup palettes perfectly exhibit my Micro Living ideals. As long as they are pretty small! Small, compact, easy to use. What more could you ask for?
